ABOUT SOUTH BIRMINGHAM PRIMARY CARE TRUST

Primary Care is the care provided by people you normally see when you first have a health problem.

It might be a visit to a doctor for anything from a simple check up to a minor operation. It could also be a visit to the dentist, optician or just a trip to the pharmacist to buy some cough mixture.

All of these services in your area are managed by South Birmingham Primary Care Trust (PCT).

We serve 380,000 people making it one of the largest PCT's in the country.

In our area there are 5 hospitals, 64 general practices, 51 optometry practices, 85 community pharmacies and 70 general dental practices, as well as a wide range of specialist health professionals such as mental health nurses and psychologists. Find out more about the PCT at:

HELPING PEOPLE TO LIVE HEALTHIER LIVES

As well as providing services such as doctors and dentists, we want to help people to be healthy.

We try and make sure people understand why they should lead healthy lifestyles and how they can do this by providing as much help and support as possible.

The three main ways to live a healthy lifestyle are to keep fit, to eat a balanced diet and to not smoke.

'HEALTHY US, HEALTHY YOU - KEEPING FIT AND FEELING GREAT!'

Just 30 minutes of exercise, 5 times a week, will drastically reduce your chances of developing some of the most dangerous health problems including heart disease and bowel cancer. It will also help to get more oxygen into your body so that you feel more energetic and alert.

MAINTAINING A HEALTHY BALANCE

Forget the fads, maintain a varied and balanced diet. A good start is to try eating 5 portions of fruit and veg a day - you will feel the difference! Eating healthily will keep you looking and feeling good inside and out and will prevent you getting ill and is often less expensive.
